|
|
I recently bought an 84 QT50 at an auction. That day after a shot of starter fluid, she took off and ran line a champ, but noticed an oil drip. I kept an eye on my fluids and continued to ride for a week. The speed would top out at 25 because it would sputter at higher RPMs.
A coworker suggested I use a cap full of SeaFoam in the gas, so I did. It then ran like a top for almost 10 minutes. It then slowly lost power and finally just died. It dipped more gas/oil when the gas was turned on...running or stopped.
What I have done since:
1) Drained the gas and put fresh in.
2) drained the 2 cycle oil, put in fresh.
3) Cleaned the jets with brass wire in the holes and lots of carb cleaner.
4) New plug. Got same number and brand as what was in the shop manual. Set gap to 0.025"
5) Pulled head cover and scrapped out a thin bit of carbon.
6) took out the oil pump, made sure it was tightly put together, and set it per the shop manual.
7) New fuel line and inline filter. cleaned the carb again.
swore like a sailor!
It now idols just fine, but cuts out when it gets 1/2 throttle or higher. One thing I could not accomplish, and can't find mention on here of, is getting the choke cable out of the carb. If it should just pull out like the throttle side, it is STUCK! The cable moved freely and acts like it is working, but I can't get it out for nothing.
Is there a secret to getting that cable out? Is this all my problem is? I am a newbee, so be gentle. Thanks! _________________ 1984 Yamahopper QT50 |

where is it leaking gas from?
does gas flow freely from the gas line if not connected to the carb?
yes, the choke should just pull right out.. that could be your problem.. it simply pulls straight out. it's a circle piece of metal inside a circle hole.. |

also.. just food for thought..
pull the oil pump off, remove the plastic gear and put the pump back on. cap off holes on the oil pump and oil input on carb. premix oil 40:1.
you can then connect the oil tank line to the gas line and use it for an extra gas tank. be sure to disconnect the oil level indicator sending unit located just behind the oil filler cap.. electricity and gas don't mix. |

Honestly, the engine exterior is to oily to really easily find the drip point. It definitly is not the carb, the drips look like 2 cycle oil. It could very well be thelittle oil pump. Like I said, it only realy drips when the fuel is on.
The gas does flow freely when unhooked from the carb.
I will try pulling on the cable to get the choke out. I just fear I will break the cable.
A buddy thinks it is getting too much oil, but I am starting to think it is sucking air. _________________ 1984 Yamahopper QT50 |

if it was getting too much oil.. it would be barreling out of the exhaust.. you'd know if it was too much oil.. |

i wish i could help you more. but i would say getting rid of the oil pump will eliminate guessing whether or not it's getting oil.. i mean, you think it's leaking oil correct?
no oil = not good.
you could also clean the oil and dirt off of it and try and trace the leak.. |

It looks like it is not gas, but oil dripping from the crank case by the upper exhaust mounting bolt.
I will try again to get get the choke cable out of the carb. I have wanted to, but between bad weather and the boys baseball, I have not had a chance.
If the choke doesnt fix things, provided I get it out, then I will try the pre-mix gas. _________________ 1984 Yamahopper QT50 |

Thanks for the pictures. Did you buy the oil pump cover or fab or fabricate it?
I have the choke body sitting in WD40 to try and get the choke cable out of the carb body. It is really stuck and I fear that I will snap the cable.
I will let you know how it goes. _________________ 1984 Yamahopper QT50 |

i didn't buy the oil pump cover.. i basically cut the oil pump in half and filled the insides in with jb weld..
it sounds to me like your choke might be stuck in the on position?? the on position for the choke is up.. so pushing it down towards the bottom of the carb would be off.. |

If the oil is coming from the exhaust flange, you may have a big enough leak there so that your exhaust is running out of there at high speeds, ruining your top end performance. |

I finally got the choke cable out along with the plunger. I am going to put it back in tonight with a new spring (as long as I have it out).
the last thing I want is to have that damn thing stuck again. Should I pute a little oil on the side to keep it from binding up in there again? _________________ 1984 Yamahopper QT50 |
