anyone use a EGT gauge for tuning a 70cc kit

Postby oilyhans » Sat Feb 16, 2013 3:43 pm

so i'm doing a 70cc kit for a customer and its still too nasty to go for a road test much of the time and i thought a EGT gauge would put me into the right
zone ...without a road test each jet change

I use a standard temp guage on bore kits but not for tuning, depending on the gear ratio it gives a safety zone to shut down before a sieze, westach is the brand and i bolt the sensor to the exhaust bolt.

When I was racing 2 stroke karts we used combination EGT and tachs. I believe Digitron made them. I may still have one somewhere.

Not cheap, but accurate with fast response and reliable.

i saw one for about $130 .... somewhere

i have a digital pyrometer and i was wondering if a laser thermometer
would do the job too.
wouldn't be a handlebar read out but it would give you the
header or head temps,

The digital pyrometer should work. You need the thermocouple in the exhaust stream when you are racing a 2 cycle kart engine burning methanol and nitromethane. When uou lean down the mixture when you are running WOT there is a fine line between getting max power and seizing the engine--you need a fast responding temp gauge. I was did a lot of business with the Wiseco Piston Company in my kart racing days.

some etg call for drilling a hole in the header
about 4" from the exhaust port .. others you just
attach to a head bolt.

there are many ways to do a test and just as long as you have
data that is consistent you can make your own test scale .
it may not correlate to the standard but will be on your data set.

the laser thermometers are faster adjusting than a
thermocouple and a pryometer

Temp guage for under $50 TTO makes a digital temp guage with its own battery so its a one wire hook up to the plug.

I think he's referring to this.
