John's wife, Rena, has a Kymco Super 9 and it always leaves everything else in the dust. As far as I know, it's a stock, water-cooled, two-stroke 50cc scooter. Not sure if they make them the same way anymore, though.

Hi Ray, you would have to look for a used Kymco Super 9 LC as they stopped them in the US in '05 but still had them here new in '08. Some new one still around though. EPA got their claws into that one. It is a rock solid scoot and is a little more robust than the standard 50. All we have out of it is the ring on the CVT and is quite a good fast ride for a 50. Lots of aftermarket goodies to make it even faster. there is a Yahoo group that has lots of info and Moped Hospital is an excellent source of speed parts etc. As a matter of fact we are toying with selling it and going another direction, but who know!

Just to let you guys know the yamaha aerox is not legal in the u.s. and the suzuki katana lc-50 is not legal in canada, the kymco super-9 or zx maybe 99% honda but you can't get that final drive which is the only way it do 50 mph, i don't see malaguti anymore which is a gilera/italjet clone and unless you mod them they will never go 50mph out of the box.

its known as d.o.t. import standards so 2 of my scoots are not legal and i converted my 2 honda's to japan lights, if you want it real bad just take it apart and ship it as parts then find a vin # off a junkyard frame and your in, its a very fine line and i work for the fed. gov.

Hi, Ray. The only correct way to determine top speeds on 50cc mopeds,
in my experience, is to use a GPS. I prefer one from Garmin, battery powered ETrex model. I use velcro to hold it on my scoots. I have Tank Touring 150 and 250, a Tomos Revival, and a TGB/Peirspeed Delivery 50ccc. All 4 units have speedsometwers that are of by 2-9 mph. So dont rely on the speedo readings.
The Tomos is a 70cc unit and tops out at 44 mph on the GPS and the TGB is a 50cc unit.completely derestricted and has a MRP exhaust system. On a flat run it will hit 39-41 mph, 44-45 down hill. The TGB speedometer is off by 7-9 mph.. If you are basing your top speeds on your speedometer readings you are probably in for a dissapointing result. In fact this last
statement applies, again in my experience, to all makes of scooters. Just
seems to be the nature of the beast.

Back in the mid 1960s Honda produced the RC 116 that was only 49.8cc and could top 120 mph. It also produced 16 hp, redlined at over 20krpm and weighed only 128 pounds.

If they could do that 50 years ago, what could they squeeze out of 50cc these days?

Replica RC 113, a similar bike:

I rode a KeeWay 50cc last weekend at Mountain Moped and was surprised at how fast it gets away and how it seems to maintain a top speed of 40+
at 3/4 throttle. It was completely stock, no mods. Now I have to qualify
this by stating that I did not have a GPS reading on it. Cody had one that
was hitting 55 by GPS readings but I think he said that it had a few mods.

Don't trust the speedometer. Both of my 50cc TGBs easily hit and hold better than "45 MPH" and the only mod is the removal of the restrictors in the transmissions. Unfortunately, "45 MPH" on the dials turns out to be 38 MPH when measured with GPS, radar, or chase vehicle.
